New Zealand Prime Minister John Key on 27th October made a stopover at the Cochin International Airport and inspected various facilities, including hi-tech baggage handling system installed by a Glidepath, a company from his country. The company had secured a contract, close to Rs.100 crores. Key, who walked around the new international terminal, hailed the construction of the new airport and global standard technology being installed there to facilitate the comfortable journey. Addressing the media persons, Key, on a four-day visit to India ending today, recalled his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and highlighted the 'growing' ties between India and New Zealand. He said companies in New Zeland offered sophisticated engineering solutions. John Key said New Zealand had been shifting its focus from the tradition fruit industry to hi-tech manufacturing. The country is also keen on strengthening its trade ties with India. He also spoke about the pilot training institute and other academic institutions in his country. Glidepath has set up a high-tec X-ray-baggage screening facility that works on the computed tomography technology (CTX) at the new terminal. The CTX machines used here are among the first in Asia. The outbound departure system set up by Glidepath is capable of processing 6,000 bags per hour. In addition, 17 integrated explosive detection systems (EDS) have also been installed at the new terminal. The 4.2-km conveyor includes 1.8 km of carousel conveyor,
Earlier, the 81-member New Zealand delegation including John Key’s wife Bronagh Key, arrived at the airport at 5.10 pm by a Royal New Zealand Air Force flight. The team left for Jakarta in Indonesia around 6.40 pm. NZ’s High Commissioner to India Grahame Morton, Indian High Commissioner to New Zealand Sanjiv Kohli and others were also present at the CIAL. The team was given a warm welcome at the airport by top Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) officials including Additional Chief Secretary and CIAL managing Director, V J Kurian, Airport Director A C K Nair, Executive Director A M Shabeer, Additional Director General of PoliceB.Sandya, , Ernakulam District Collector Y Safarulla, Assistant Collector Dr.Renu Raj.
